Microfiber upholstery fabric is a lightweight, high thread-count polyester blend that looks like suede or leather. It is available in a variety of colors, including prints, and is water and stain resistant, making it a desirable covering for furniture pieces such as couches and chairs. Microfiber is also hypoallergenic, making it a good upholstery choice for people who suffer from allergies or asthma. The origins of microfiber — it’s the product of waste left from petroleum refining — can be a pro or a con, depending on how you look at it.
From an environmental standpoint, supporters point to microfiber upholstery fabric’s use of petroleum waste — a form of recycling or reusing — as proof that it is good for the environment. They also point to its natural stain resistance and lack of need to be sprayed with a chemical stain preventive. Detractors say the use of petroleum waste is not good for the environment. They see its popularity as the spread of a potentially harmful chemical into homes, where they fear it could pollute the structure’s indoor air quality. In my opinion this a baseless claim. Did you know that the same process has been used to make polypropylene since 1970s and was made into olefin fiber which ALL of us have lived with since then?. Car carpet and upholstery, drapes, home and office carpet as well as the most durable upholstery fabric ever– Herculon, are a few examples. Re-purposing petroleum waste and bringing the end product into the home is nothing new.
One plus for microfiber upholstery fabric is its ability to hold color well. This has resulted in a range of furniture color options, from traditional beiges and browns to non-traditional colors such as bright red, plum, tangerine and various shades of green. Microfiber upholstery fabric featuring a print design also is readily available.
It also cleans very well, from a professional upholstery cleaner’s pointof view. See my videos of Cleancare of Boulder’s cleaning of a thoroughly soiled microfiber sectional. People with children and those looking for sturdy furniture for a family room or game room may especially like microfiber upholstery fabric for its durability and stain resistance. The material is so tightly woven — with fibers thinner than a human hair — that it naturally repels water and stains, though it is not stain-proof. If allowed to soak in, liquid stains can cause severe water marks; dirt can also become trapped and be difficult to remove. That's when it's time to call for professional sofa cleaning in Boulder CO.The fabric is durable enough that many companies — confident in their product — offer a form of furniture insurance that includes a telephone line for stain support and a furniture replacement plan for pieces that become soiled beyond repair.
While microfiber upholstery fabric is easy to find in most contemporary furniture stores, microfiber fabric is gaining popularity in a number of arenas. Everything from bath towels to sheets, pillowcases and blankets are being made from microfiber. Cleaning supplies made from microfiber also have fans and cleaning professionals who say microfiber cleaning cloths and mops are easier to use and clean better than more traditional cleaning supplies.
